Verbs are action words.

MAIN VERBS AND HELPING VERBS
Read these sentences and pay attention to the highlighted words and the underlined words.
I can speak a little Tamil.
He is working late today.
• Monika could swim when she was three.
• They were playing in the park.
The highlighted words and the underlined words are verbs. But the highlighted words are helping the underlined verbs to complete the meaning of the sentence. The highlighted verbs are helping verbs. The underlined verbs are main verbs.

The verbs that show the main action in a sentence are called MAIN VERBS.
The verbs that help the main verbs to complete the meaning and show the tense of the sentence are called HELPING VERBS.

The most common helping verbs are :
to be: am, is, are, was, were
to have: have, has, had
to do: do, does, did
modals: could, should, would, can, shall, will, may, might, must

TRANSITIVE VERBS AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS
Read these sentences.
• Mayank threw the ball.
• Radhika loves the puppies.
These sentences have an object. An object is a person or thing that receives the action of the verbs.

Verbs that have objects are called TRANSITIVE VERB.

Now, read these sentences.
• She laughed aloud.
• The trees are moving in the breeze.
These sentences do not have an object.

Verbs that do not have objects are called INTRANSITIVE VERBS.
